Updating RAZR V3 Firmware

I’ve received a few emails regarding my recent post on the RAZR V3. Google has apparently placed me high on the search term for “razr v3 firmware”, and in an effort to actually provide some useful information, this brief post is about where you can update your firmware on your phone.

Disclaimer: I am not responsible for anything that happens as a result of you messing with your phone. Do this at your own risk. Also, I’m not aware of this being illegal. If it is, someone please let me know.

There are two different types of upgrades you can do to a V3: a flash or a flex. To quote MotoX in his RAZR V3 flashing and flexing guide, here’s the difference:

By a flash update, you might be able to see the improvemets in quality of camera, navigating speed, signal strength as well as fixing bugs. By default, flash (reflash) file contains a language pack, and it will not touch the personal settings on your phone since it doesn’t contain a flex part of the phone. Flash file extension for RAZR V3 is shx….With a new flex update, you could gain new features, ringtones, java games/apps, wallpapers, and get rid of provider brandings, etc. Flex file extension for RAZR V3 is hs. You will lose personal settings such as contacts when you flex your phone. Make sure to backup before flexing.

Hopefully you still have your USB cable that came with your V3. You’ll also need a Windows PC. If you meet these requirements, congratulations: you’re halfway there.

You’ll need to install some software on your PC, and the rest is straightforward. Make sure to backup your phone prior to doing anything. Software, information, and helpful people can be found at MotoModders. If you’ve got a different Motorola phone, you may be able to find flash and flex files on that site too.

The forums are where where you will find all the information/goodies you need.

If you have T-Mobile service and are using a different providers phone (ie. Cingular, AT&T). You can go to this site and configure your settings for both WAP & MMS. The WAP settings will allow you to use the browser within your phone with T-MobileWeb service and the MMS will allow you to send and receive picture/multimedia messages. The site is: http://us.t-mobile.mywds.com When you load this site select the first option to configure your phone. Then it’s as easy as following the prompts. Good luck and happy browsing!

Can anyone definitively tell me if FLASHING a new firmware version on an UNLOCKED RAZR leaves the unlocked status alone. (Where is the carrier lock actually stored?)
